The West Bengal Police arrested AIMIM leader Mofakkarul Islam on Friday. He is accused of leading the protests held in Malda on Wednesday, during which seven Special Intensive Revision (SIR) officials were held hostage. Islam—a lawyer by profession and the AIMIM candidate from Itahar in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections—is being described as the prime conspirator behind the Malda incident. He was arrested at Bagdogra Airport while attempting to flee the state.
